As the world’s economy shifts from the West to the East, Leo Burnett knows that China represents a huge opportunity for the Irish Export Market.

If you need convincing just take a look at these statistics:

The number of US dollar billionaires in China doubled from 130 in 2009 to 271 in 2010, giving China the world’s second-highest number of billionaires. China is also now the world’s second-largest consumer of luxury goods with 27.5% of the global share

Currently China is the fastest growing major economy in the world, with its annual average GDP growth between 2001 and 2010 at 10.5%, and the Chinese economy is predicted to grow at an average annual rate of 9.5% between 2011 and 2015

Between 2007 and 2011, China’s economic growth rate was equivalent to all of the G7 countries’ growth combined

China is the third-most-visited country in the world and is the world’s second-largest trading power behind the US

China’s middle-class population has reached more than 100 million as of 2011, while the number of super-rich individuals worth more than US$1.5 million is estimated to be 825,000

The Raspberry Pi, which went on sale today, is built to teach children the fundamentals of computer programming. It runs on open-source operating system Linux and can plug into a typical computer monitor – with additional ports used to attach a keyboard, mouse and other peripherals.

Massive demand for the computer has caused the website of one supplier to crash under the weight of heavy traffic.

UK digital marketing agency iCrossing predicts that Facebook will reach 1bn active users by August of this year if it continues on its current trajectory.

Last September at F8, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed Facebook had reached the 800m member milestone.

“Looking at the data from 2006-mid-2008, it looks like Facebook was growing at an exponential rate, however, more recent data suggests it’s growing in a linear fashion.”

Lyons said Facebook’s growth has slowed or stopped in early adopter countries like the US and UK.

“However, developing countries such as India and Brazil have shown strong growth, with India growing from 22m users to 36m and Brazil going from 13m to 30m in the last nine months.”

“Both are large countries with millions of potential users who have yet to sign up to Facebook, with only 3pc of India’s population on Facebook and 16pc of Brazil’s (compared to 49pc of America’s population or 47pc of the UK’s population), countries such as these will clearly contribute heavily to Facebook’s continued growth,” Lyons said.

Netflix officially launched in the U.K. and Ireland on Sunday night. They didn’t reveal how big its catalog in both countries is, but a blog post penned by the company’s chief product officer Neil Hunt mentioned shows like Prison Break and Damages as well as films 3:10 to Yuma and The English Patient as examples for content being available through the service.

Netfix holds a dominant position in the US, where it accounts for almost a third of all bandwidth consumed. Anything less than market dominance here would be considered a failure. Standing in its way are illegal file sharing, console platforms like Xbox LIVE, Apple TV, rent-by-post service Screenclick and catch-up websites like RTE Player and 4OD.

At €6.99 per month (first month free for now), their flat rate subscription is less than the price of a single cinema ticket or rental of two new releases from the high street. It’s also cheaper than renting through Apple TV and Xbox LIVE and should have a far better catalogue. As iTunes has demonstrated, even when technology makes piracy simple, people are happy to part with money for a safe, convenient, legal alternative.

Unlike the U.S. offering, users in the UK and Ireland will be able to connect their accounts to Facebook to share their viewing habits and receive recommendations from friends. Netflix hasn’t launched similar functionality in the U.S. yet due to an outdated privacy law.

Will Netflix clean up in Ireland? It’s cheap enough to be a painless addition to anyone’s home entertainment set-up and is a feasible alternative to subscription movie channel packages. If anything, Netflix will force the home entertainment sphere to better itself, and that will only be a good thing for customers.

Companies will appear in your news feed as if they are your Facebook friends to share whatever message it is they’re trying to get across.

You can expect to see the ads appear starting some time this month. Facebook indicates that you’ll only see ads from brands you’ve interacted with via likes, comments, or being a fan.
Facebook spokesperson Annie Ta said, “You will never a post from a page you are not a fan of, or from people who are not your friends. We want to be really thoughtful about this, so we’ll have a lot of rate limits in place.”
